Event Horizon Research Pledge

Our Commitment to an Equitable and Inclusive Future

At Event Horizon Research, we believe that knowledge is a fundamental right, not a privilege. We recognize that science, education, and research have historically excluded marginalized communities, and we are committed to changing that reality.

We pledge to embed diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) into the very fabric of our mission—not just as a statement of values, but as a driving force in our initiatives, partnerships, and community engagement. Our commitment to social impact extends beyond our own organization, as we strive to contribute to a world where scientific discovery is accessible, inclusive, and beneficial to all.

This pledge is a living document, evolving as we learn and grow in our understanding of what it means to truly be an inclusive and equitable organization.

Our Pledge

1. Diversity: Uplifting All Voices in Science and Education

We recognize that innovation thrives in diverse environments and that a variety of perspectives leads to richer discoveries and more impactful solutions. We commit to:

  • Actively recruit, support, and collaborate with individuals from underrepresented and historically marginalized communities, including but not limited to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), LGBTQIA+ individuals, women in STEM, people with disabilities, and individuals from low-income backgrounds.

  • Challenge homogeneity in science, education, and research spaces by promoting diverse voices and contributions.

  • Create programs that are culturally responsive and address the unique challenges faced by different communities in accessing scientific education and resources.

  • Ensure our media, events, and outreach reflect the diversity of the communities we serve, avoiding tokenization and performative representation.

2. Equity: Breaking Down Barriers to Knowledge and Opportunity

Equity means ensuring fair access to education, research, and innovation. We acknowledge that systemic barriers have excluded many from participating in scientific and educational fields, and we commit to:

  • Offer free and open-access educational resources to eliminate financial barriers to scientific learning.

  • Prioritize outreach to underserved schools and communities, ensuring that students from all backgrounds have the opportunity to explore science and technology.

  • Advocate for equitable funding in research and work to dismantle biases that limit access to grants, scholarships, and career opportunities for underrepresented groups.

  • Ensure that our events, programs, and digital platforms are accessible to individuals with disabilities, incorporating inclusive design and assistive technologies.

3. Inclusion: Creating Safe and Welcoming Spaces for All

Inclusion is about more than representation—it’s about belonging. We commit to fostering an environment where all individuals feel safe, valued, and empowered to contribute. This means:

  • Implementing zero-tolerance policies against discrimination, harassment, and bias within our organization and all affiliated programs.

  • Encouraging open dialogue and active listening, ensuring that diverse perspectives are welcomed and incorporated into decision-making processes.

  • Training our leadership, staff, and volunteers on anti-bias education, cultural competency, and inclusive practices to foster a truly inclusive organization.

  • Establishing feedback mechanisms that allow community members to share concerns, ideas, and experiences so we can continuously improve.

4. Social Impact: Science as a Tool for Justice and Change

Science is not neutral—it has the power to shape societies, policies, and futures. Event Horizon Research is committed to using science as a force for good, ensuring that our work contributes to social progress. We pledge to:

  • Support policies and initiatives that advance scientific literacy, equitable education, and social justice.

  • Collaborate with grassroots organizations, educators, and policymakers to create systemic change in how science and technology are taught, funded, and applied.

  • Challenge the misuse of scientific research that perpetuates harm, inequality, or unethical practices.

  • Incorporate community-led research models that center the voices and expertise of the people most affected by scientific challenges.

  • Ensure that our work in AI, emerging technology, and scientific research is developed ethically and with a focus on benefiting society rather than reinforcing disparities.

5. Accountability: A Living Commitment to Growth and Action

We recognize that this pledge is only as strong as our actions. Words alone do not create change—consistent, intentional efforts do. To hold ourselves accountable, we commit to:

  • Regularly evaluate our DEI and social impact initiatives, measuring progress and identifying areas for improvement.

  • Publish annual reports detailing our DEI efforts, successes, and challenges to maintain transparency with our community.

  • Establish an advisory council of diverse voices to guide our inclusivity efforts and provide insights on how we can improve.

  • Encourage community participation and feedback, ensuring that our initiatives truly serve the needs of those we aim to support.

  • Continuously educate ourselves, acknowledging that DEI work is an ongoing process that requires humility, learning, and adaptation.

Our Promise to You

At Event Horizon Research, we believe that the pursuit of knowledge should be a collective journey—one that includes and empowers everyone.

We pledge to use our platform, resources, and influence to fight for equity, challenge systemic exclusion, and ensure that scientific discovery benefits all communities. We invite our supporters, collaborators, and the public to hold us accountable as we strive to uphold these values every day.

This pledge is not just a statement—it is a call to action. It is a commitment to listen, learn, and lead with integrity, ensuring that our work reflects the world we wish to create: one that is just, inclusive, and driven by the shared pursuit of knowledge.
